Many pen refills are of generic type, having a common external shape, configuration and dimensions, and can be used in a variety of branded pens from different makers. The D1 ballpoint refill is an example, 67mm in length and 2.3mm in diameter, available in several colours, and used widely across many makes of ballpoint and multifunction pens, but produced by many unknown makers in chinesium, and of questionable durability and write out.
It is always recommended that you use a proprietary branded refill from Schmidt, Lamy, Schneider, etc, in your pen when purchasing a pen refill. This avoids the issue that often arises when customers buy a generic refill that is thought to be interchangeable with a branded refill.
Most makers recommend the use of their own pen refills and inks (some writing inks have been formulated to have the characteristics and properties suited to that fountain pen).
When on holiday and visiting a pen boutique it is wise to consider the availability of the branded pen refills on your return home.
